Understanding Low Mood and Depression
Everyone experiences periods of sadness or low mood from time to time, particularly in response to difficult life events or challenging circumstances. However, when these feelings persist, become overwhelming or begin to interfere with everyday life, they may be a sign of depression.
Low mood and depression can affect people in different ways and involve both emotional and physical symptoms. Emotionally, people may experience feelings of sadness, emptiness, hopelessness, irritability or a loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed. They may also find it difficult to concentrate, feel excessively guilty or critical of themselves, or struggle with feelings of worthlessness. Physically, depression can lead to changes in sleep, appetite and energy levels (amongst other things), leaving people feeling exhausted, unmotivated or unable to cope with everyday tasks.
Causes and Experiences of Depression
Although low mood and depression are often spoken about as a single experience, they can vary considerably from person to person. Some people may experience mild but persistent symptoms, whilst others may go through periods where their mood has a more significant impact on their relationships, work and overall quality of life. Understanding the particular nature of your experiences can be an important step towards making sense of what you are going through.
There is rarely a single cause of depression. It often develops through a combination of factors, including stressful life events, relationship difficulties, bereavement, work pressures, physical health concerns, past experiences or ongoing feelings of loneliness and isolation. Sometimes the reasons may be clear, whilst at other times they can be harder to identify.
How Counselling For Low Mood and Depression Can Help
Counselling and psychotherapy can provide a safe and supportive space to explore the factors that may be contributing to low mood or depression. It can also provide an opportunity to learn more about depression and the ways in which it affects both the body and mind through psychoeducation. By developing greater awareness of thoughts, feelings and behaviours, it is possible to gain a better understanding of the patterns that maintain low mood and to discover healthier ways of coping. With the right support, many people find that depression becomes more manageable, allowing them to reconnect with what matters most and experience a renewed sense of hope and wellbeing.
