Understanding OCD
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common mental health condition that can affect people of all ages. Whilst many people experience unwanted thoughts from time to time, OCD involves persistent and distressing thoughts, images or urges, known as obsessions, which can cause significant anxiety and interfere with everyday life.
People with OCD often engage in compulsions, which are repetitive behaviours or mental acts carried out in an attempt to reduce anxiety or prevent something bad from happening. These compulsions may include checking, washing, counting, seeking reassurance, repeating actions or avoiding certain situations. Although compulsions can provide temporary relief, they often reinforce the cycle of anxiety and distress over time.
Different Types of OCD
OCD can take many different forms and may present differently from person to person. Some people may experience fears around contamination, whilst others may struggle with excessive responsibility, intrusive thoughts relating to harm, health concerns, relationships or a need for certainty and perfection. It is important to recognise that intrusive thoughts are a common feature of OCD and that having such thoughts does not mean a person wishes to act on them or that they reflect who they are.
There is rarely a single cause of OCD. It is thought to develop through a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors, and symptoms may be influenced by stressful life events, periods of change or heightened levels of anxiety. Identifying the factors that contribute to or maintain OCD is not always straightforward, but gaining a greater understanding of these patterns can be an important step towards recovery.
How OCD Counselling Can Help
Counselling and psychotherapy can provide a safe and supportive space to explore the impact that OCD is having on your life. It can also offer an opportunity to learn more about OCD and the way it affects both the mind and body through psychoeducation. By developing greater awareness of thoughts, feelings and behaviours, it is possible to gain a better understanding of the patterns that maintain OCD and to discover healthier ways of responding to distress. With the right support, many people find that OCD becomes more manageable, allowing them to live with greater confidence and freedom.
