Understanding Loss and Bereavement
Loss is an inevitable part of life, yet it can be one of the most difficult experiences we face. Whilst bereavement often refers to the death of someone important to us, feelings of grief can also arise following the loss of a relationship, a job, our health, independence or other significant life changes. Whatever the nature of the loss, it can have a profound impact on our emotional wellbeing and sense of identity.
Grief is a deeply personal experience, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. People respond to loss in different ways and may experience a wide range of emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, relief, loneliness or even numbness. Alongside these emotional responses, grief can also affect the body, leading to fatigue, changes in appetite, difficulty sleeping, poor concentration or a sense of physical heaviness.
Understanding Grief
Although grief is often described as a series of stages, many people find that their experience is far less predictable. Emotions can come and go, sometimes changing from one day to the next, and significant dates, places or memories may bring feelings of grief back to the surface. Understanding that grief is not a linear process can help people to approach their experiences with greater compassion and patience.
The impact of loss may also be influenced by many different factors, including the nature of the relationship, the circumstances surrounding the loss, previous experiences of grief and the support available from family and friends. For some people, grief gradually becomes easier to carry over time, whilst others may find that it continues to affect their daily lives for longer than they expected. Every person’s experience is unique.
How Counselling Can Help with Loss and Bereavement
Counselling and psychotherapy can provide a safe, supportive and confidential space to explore your experiences of loss and bereavement at your own pace. It can also provide an opportunity to better understand the emotional and physical impact of grief through psychoeducation. By reflecting on your experiences, making sense of your emotions and developing greater self-compassion, it is possible to begin adapting to life after loss whilst continuing to honour what has been important to you. With the right support, many people find that they are able to carry their grief in a way that allows them to reconnect with hope, meaning and everyday life.
